Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the strength of an optical fiber, by converting the surface layer of an SiO2 glass fiber into a layer containing silicon nitride, there by preventing the deprival of oxygen of SiO2 glass with a metallic layer applied to the glass fiber. CONSTITUTION:The metal-coated optical fiber is composed of a core 1 made of a glass, an SiO2 glass surface layer 3 containing silicon nitride and applied to the surface of the core and a metal layer 4 applied to the glass surface layer 3. The surface layer 3 is formed by depositing an SiO2 glass soot layer to the circumference of the core 1 and heat-treating the layer in a nitrogen- containing gas atmosphere. The surface layer 3 prevents the deprival of oxygen from the SiO2 glass of the core 1 by the metal layer 4.
