PURPOSE:To perform a multiplex communication by one optical fiber by achieving the function of an LED as a photodetector, and employing a composite LED having at least two LEDs including different wavelengths and disposed in parallel in one case. CONSTITUTION:Two communication equipments having composite LEDs 2, 2' near a light transmission ports of bodies 1, 1' are oppositely provided, and a sole optical transmission passage is formed through one optical fiber between both the composite LEDs. The emitting and photodetecting functions of the LEDs of the composite LEDs 2, 2' can be arbitrarily electrically switched by input/output circuits contained in the equipments. That is, the LEDs in the composite LEDs 2, 2' separately perform functions as a light emitting element at the time of transmitting and as a photodetector at the time of receiving by the input/output circuits, and particular operations of multiplex communications can be performed by one optical fiber. Further, since a whole system can be remarkably reduced in size and the equipments for transmitting and receiving have the same structures, the cost reduction due to the unitary production can be expected.
