Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable simplification and economization of a system by a method wherein two communication devices provided with the same light emitting elements which are capable of electrically switching their functions that emit and detect light are disposed facing each other and a single optical transmission path is constituted between two light emitting elements. CONSTITUTION:The photovoltaic effect of a light emitting element, for instance, such as an TED is utilized. That is, two communication devices are disposed facing each other which are composed of the same kind of light emitting elements 2 and 2' provided facing the light transmitting aperture of devices 1 and 1', a single optical transmission path is constituted between the light emitting elements 2 and 2' through the intermediary of an optical fiber F, and the light emitting and detecting functions of the light emitting elements 2 and 2' can be optionally and electrically switched from one to the other by means of the input-output circuits R and R' built in the communication devices. By these processes, a photodetector can be despensed with, a single optical fiber can be realized, the device can be prevented from being larger in size as the light emitting and detecting functions of the light emitting element are capable of switching electrically from one to the other, and the light emitting and detecting device can be uniformly produced, so that cost can be remarkably reduced.
