Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the operation of an optical shutter having a stable quantity of light by multiplex driving at a high speed by utilizing the safety on one side of a ferroelectric liquid crystal panel and executing erasing always to an off side at the end of the selection period in driving waveforms. CONSTITUTION:Only one of the two orientation states that the ferroelectric liquid crystal element attains when electric fields of different polarities are impressed thereto is put into the stable state. This ferroelectric liquid crystal optical shutter is provided with polarizing films before and after the element in such a manner that the transmittance attains the min. off level in said stable state. The electric field in the direction where the element attains the arrangement state of the on level at which the transmittance is high is impressed to the element at the voltage value of the extent of preventing the inversion of the off level to the on level in the front part of the selection period for the scanning signal in the wave form for multiplex driving of the above-mentioned shutter. The electric field on the off side is, therefore, impressed to the element in the rear part of the selection; in addition, the deviation to the on side and the leakage of light are obviated even if the voltage to turn on the other shutter part of the same selection electrode is applied. The liquid crystal optical shutter having excellent optical characteristics is thus obtd.
