Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the output of an expander by providing a heat exchanger on the inflow side or the outflow side of natural gas for the expander which drives an air compressor. CONSTITUTION:In an apparatus for driving a compressor 2 by means of an expander 1 for which natural gas is used as operating fluid, the outlet temperature of the natural gas is inevitably lowered when the inlet pressure is raised so as to increase the output of the expander 1. The natural gas temperature on the outflow side of the expander 1 should be kept above a predetermined temperature in view of restrictions (anti-freeze) for following plants. When a heat exchanger 10 is provided on the outflow side of the expander 1, the heat exchanger 10 acts as an after-heater for the expander 1, so that the temperature on the outflow side of the expander 1 is raised, and the inlet pressure can also be raised. Accordingly, the output of the expander 1 can be improved. On the other hand, it acts as a pre-cooler for intake air for the air compressor 2, so that the specific volume of intake air is decreased and the discharge rate of the air compressor 2 increases as a result.
