Abstract

PURPOSE:To extract an optional wavelength selectively from plural multiplexed different wavelengths by forming a 1st optical waveguide and (n) optical waveguides which have a wider band gap than a multiple quantization well and nearly equal effective refractive indexes. CONSTITUTION:When an electric field Ej is applied to the total reflecting surface (MQW reflection part) of an (i)th intersection part, the angles between an optical waveguide 14 for input and the MQW reflection parts 11-13 are so set as to cause total reflection at a rate (-DELTAn0/n) of refractive index variation. Here, a wavelength lambdaj with which (-DELTAn0/n) is obtained at the time of the electric field Ej can be selected by the refractive index variation of the MQW by selecting (-DELTAn0/n) properly. Therefore, only a light signal with the wavelength lambdaj is reflected totally at the (i)th intersection part and led out of the intersection waveguide selectively. Light signals with other wavelengths are passed as they are because the total reflection conditions are not satisfied by the electric field Ej. Further, electric field intensity different from the Ej is applied at other intersection parts to lead out signal light with a wavelength other than lambdaj which satisfies the total reflection conditions.
