Abstract

PURPOSE:To decompose the NOx in the exhaust gas having a high content of oxygen without using a reducing agent by setting the NOx decomposing catalyst expressed by a specified crystal structural formula in the passage for the exhaust gas from the automobile having an internal-combustion engine. CONSTITUTION:The NOx decomposing catalyst having the crystal structure expressed by formula I is formed (A and A' are an alkaline-earth metal such as Ba and Sr, B and B' are a rare-earth metal such as Y, Nd, and La, C and C' are a copper-group metal such as Cu and Ag, 0<=x,x'<=3.0, 0<=y,y'<=2.0, 0<=z,z'<=4.0, 4.0<=alpha<=8.0, and 0<=beta<=2.0). The NOx decomposing catalyst 3 is set in the passage for the exhaust gas from the automobile having an internal- combustion engine 1 to form the catalyst for purifying exhaust gas. The NOx in the exhaust gas contg. about 10% oxygen and the NOx of the order of magnitude of ppm can be decomposed by this catalyst constitution.
