Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain lightweight aggregate carrying vitreous film thereon, with deceased admixing water required, by mixing respective granular powder of expandable shale and volcanic rock containing vitreous matter, carrying out granulation followed by calcination.
CONSTITUTION: First, expandable shale is ground into fine granules or powder of desired size. Thence, (A) ca. 90W70wt.% of said fine granules or powder and (B) ca. 10W30wt.% of fine granules or powder of volcanic rock containing vitreous matter such as obsidian or perlite are mixed followed by moistening, then granulation. The resulting product is dried followed by calcination in e.g. a rotary kiln. The surface of the resulting granulated product is in a semifused state along with gas generated therein, leading to bubble formation, thus resulting in the expansion of the softened whole product. When cooled following that, the objective lightweight aggregate with vitreous film formed thereon can be obtained.
