Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the titled aggregate consisting essentially of tobermorite and/ or xonotlite calcium silicate hydrate suitable for giving a product with superior heat insulation, low specific gravity and high strength and having a structure composed of irregularly bound fine agglomerates each spreading radially from a nucleus as the center, having a prescribed diameter and showing a flowerlike pattern.
CONSTITUTION: Siliceous starting material such as silica powder is mixed with calcareous starting material such as slaked lime powder. The mixture is put into an autoclave as it is, that is, without mixing with water, and it is reacted in steam at high temp. and pressure to form the desired product. When silica powder having ≥98% purity and 5μm average particle size and slaked lime powder (special grade slaked lime) are used as starting materials, they are reacted in 1.0mol ratio of CaO/ SiO2 in satd. steam at 200°C under 15kg/cm2 pressure to mainly form xonotlite calcium silicate hydrate. The resulting titled aggregate has a structure composed of irregularly bound agglomerates each spreading radially from a nucleus as the center, showing a flowerlike pattern and having 5W100μm diameter when observed with an electron microscope.
