Abstract

PURPOSE:To enlarge display capacity of a liquid crystal display device and to obtain uncolored display by providing a liquid crystal layer to which display signals of the liquid crystal display device are impressed, and, additionally thereto, a second liquid crystal layer having a twisted structure in a reverse direction to the afore-mentioned liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A first liquid crystal layer 7 constituted of anisotropic liquid crystal molecules having electrode layers 5, 6 are arranged to between substrates 1, 2 of a liquid crystal display device. Deformation of the twisted structure formed by a nonselective image element and a selective image element is lessened or increased in accordance with a relation between a tilt angle of the molecules and an impressed voltage, when the arrangement is changed to a parallel arrangement to a direction of the electric field from an arrangement in the twisted direction by impressing an electric voltage to the layers 5, 6. Further, a second liquid crystal layer 8 is formed between substrates 3, 4 and the twisted structure of the liquid crystal layer 8 is arranged to direct in the reverse direction to the liquid crystal layer 7, and the liquid crystal layers 7, 8 are built in layers interposing the substrates 2, 3. Thus, the display capacity is enlarged and satisfactory black and white display is performed.
