Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:The optically active compound of formula (X is -CO-O or -O-CO-; R<1> and R<2> are 2-16C straight-chain alkyl; * represents asymmetric carbon) or its racemic isomer. EXAMPLE:4-n-Octyloxybenzoic acid 4'-[1-(n-butyloxycarbonyl)ethyloxy]-4-biphenyl ester. USE:A substance for liquid crystal display element. It is colorless or pale yellow in pure state. The compound is chemically stable and has broad liquid crystal temperature range. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced by esterifying an acid chloride of a 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acid with 4'-hydroxy-4-[1-(n- alkyloxycarbonyl)ethyloxy]biphenyl.
