Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [R1 is 2-10C alkyl; m and n are 1 or 2; X is group shown by formula V or single bond; R2 is 1-10C alkyl; group shown by formula VI and group shown by formula VII are asymme tric carbon wherein absolute configuration is (R) or (S)]. EXAMPLE:4-[(R)-1-Methylheptyloxy]phenyl 4'-[(S)-2-propyloxypropanoyloxy]biph enyl-4-carboxylate. USE:A colorless liquid crystal compound having extremely high spontaneous polarization and excellent chemical stability to light rays, water and heat, providing a liquid crystal material having ferroelectricity and having use possibil ity especially to a liquid crystal display element having excellent response and memory. PREPARATION:For example, a compound shown by formula II is reacted with a chlorinating agent such as SOCl2 to form an acid chloride shown by formula III, which is reacted with an optically active phenol shown by formula IV in the presence of a basic substance such as pyridine to give a compound shown by formula I when X is group shown by formula V.
