Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for polycarbonate suitable as a material for optical instrument elements in good yield in a simple process, by reacting o-phenylphenol with a sulfonating agent in the presence of an aromatic sulfonic acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:o-Phenylphenol is reacted with a sulfonating agent (e.g. concentrated sulfuric acid) in the presence of an aromatic sulfonic acid catalyst (e.g. benzenesulfonic acid) at 100-200 deg.C, preferably 120-180 deg.C to afford the aimed substance. The sulfonating agent is used in an amount of 0.1-0.5mol. based on 1mol. o-phenylphenol and the catalyst is used in an amount of 0.5-10mol.% based on the sulfonating agent. Although a reaction solvent may or may not be used, a solvent, such as chlorobenzene, is preferably used for distilling away formed water when the concentrated sulfuric acid, etc., are employed as the sulfonating agent.
