Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the wear resistance of a base material made of cemented carbide alloy, by forming a layer of the boride, born nitride, boron carbonitride, etc., of a specific metal on the surface of a base material made of cemented carbide alloy via a binding layer composed of ceramics and further forming a protective layer on the above. CONSTITUTION:A layer of one or more kinds among the carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of the group-IVa, -Va, and -VIa metals of the periodic table is formed, by a CVD or PVD method, as a binding layer on the surface of a cemented carbide alloy member, such as cutting tools, prepared by compacting a super hard WC powder by the use of Co as a binder and then sintering the resulting green compact. Subsequently, a substance excellent in strength at high temp. and thermal conductivity, such as the borides, boron nitrides, boron carbonitrides, etc., of the same metal elements is allowed to adhere to the surface of the cutting tool made of super hard sintered alloy via the binding layer. Finally, a layer of one or more kinds among nitrides and carbonitrides of the above metals is further formed as a protective layer on the above respectively by a CVD or PVD method. By this method, the wear resistance of the cutting tool made of super hard sintered alloy excellent in wear resistance can be improved while making the most of the strength at high temp. of the above borides, boron nitrides, and boron carbonitrides.
