Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve magnetic characteristics by forming an underlying layer on a nonmagnetic substrate, then subjecting the layer to a sputter etching treatment in a specified gaseous atmosphere and forming a magnetic layer on the surface of the underlying layer. CONSTITUTION:After the underlying layer consisting of Cr or Cr alloy is formed on the nonmagnetic substrate, the surface of the underlying layer is subjected to the sputter etching in the mixed gaseous atmosphere composed of gaseous argon and reducing gas. The adsorption layer of water molecule, etc., formed on the surface of the underlying layer is thereby removed and the oxide layer on the surface of the underlying layer is reduced by the reducing gas, by which the clean sub-surface is obtd. The magnetic layer consisting of the Co or Co alloy is then formed on the surface of such underlying layer. The magnetic is thus sufficiently epitaxially grown on the underlying layer, by which the magnetic characteristics are improved.
