Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 一対の導管の間に滅菌シールされた接続を形成
する必要性は、特に血液および血液成分の取扱い
の分野、そして容器間に無菌接続が望まれる他の
分野においても生ずる。
血液を取り扱う分野で、バツグもしくはその類
似物中の血液ユニツトの2分の1だけを使用する
ことが望まれる場合がある。このような事態が発
生すると、通常認められている血液バツグの無菌
的開封方法を使用することにより無菌性を維持す
る努力が為されているときでも、バツグが開封さ
れた後は使用されない血液ユニツトの残部は1日
以内に廃棄するのが慣例である。これはもしバク
テリアに僅か数時間以内にわたつて増殖すること
が許容され、その後該血液が患者に投与される
と、一個または二個の空気中のバクテリアでも敗
血症の危険性を発生するほど貯蔵血液中で増殖し
得るからである。
したがつて、ユニツトの一部のみを必要とする
とき該血液ユニツトの残部を廃棄する必要性を排
除するため、またはシールされた無菌の連通が
種々の容器間に望まれる他の多くの理由で、発展
中の無菌流体移送システムにおいて非常に多くの
研究がなされている。
例えば、バークマン等の米国特許第4022256号
は、使用する温度において非溶融性のプラスチツ
ク材料の内層を熱溶融性のチユーブが支承してい
る無菌接続手段を記載する。無菌だと主張する接
続は、該チユーブの外層を溶融し、非溶融性の層
を加圧する加熱金型を使用することによつて形成
され、該チユーブの溶融した層を単一の穴のあい
た層に形成することにより、二つのチユーブの間
に無菌接続が形成される。
バークマンの特許は、導管の溶融性層を介して
非溶融性材料層を加圧する特別の加熱金型を必要
とする。また、バークマン特許に示された具体例
においては、溶融性材料が加熱金型に対して押し
付けられる。加圧工程後金型が引き離される時の
加熱金型に対する溶融性材料の粘着は該接続を開
裂しまたは少なくとも著しく弱める可能性を有す
る。
そのため本願の第一の発明の目的および効果
は、二つの導管を無菌的に接続するため加熱およ
び加圧金型を使用せず、かつ金型へ溶融した材料
が付着しそのため形成された接続が金型から離さ
れる時強度が低下することがない、接続部を放射
エネルギーによつて加熱溶融する形式の二つの導
管を接続し、その間にシールされた連通を形成す
る方法を提供することである。
該第一の発明は特許請求の範囲第1項に規定さ
れている。
第二の発明の目的および効果は、それぞれ容器
へ接続された一対の導管を該容器の密封性および
無菌性を破ることなく無菌的に接続するための接
続部材を提供し、そのため該接続部材は接続のた
め加熱および加圧用の金型を使用せず、その代わ
りに接続部分を放射エネルギーの照射によつて加
熱溶融し、接続と両容器間の連通のための通路を
形成することである。
該第二の発明は特許請求の範囲第7項に規定さ
れている。
以上の各発明に共通する事項は、熱可塑性材料
よりなるシール壁を加熱溶融して孔あけするのに
放射エネルギーを照射することである。一般にプ
ラスチツクは熱の不良導体であるから熱伝導によ
つて加熱するには時間がかかる。その点放射エネ
ルギー照射は短時間に溶融温度へ加熱することが
可能であり、かつ一点へ集中して照射して狭い面
積を溶融することができるので、熱の伝導と加圧
のため特殊の金型を使用するバークマンの米国特
許第4022256号の器具および方法よりもすぐれて
いる。
本発明によれば、二つの導管の間に滅菌接続を
得るための加熱および加圧金型の使用は排除され
る。その代わりに、溶融部分に対し金型もしくは
その類似物の如何なる物理的接触もなしに、該導
管の壁の一部を選択的に溶融するため放射エネル
ギーが使用される。また本発明の接続部材は、溶
融した無菌接続域が機械的に開裂するのを防ぐた
め、二つの導管の間に機械的な接続を提供する連
結手段が設けられている。
本発明によれば、接続、殊に無菌接続がシール
された導管の間に形成される。各々の導管は、好
ましくは少なくとも約200℃の融点を有し、そし
てここで使用しようとしている特定の放射エネル
ギーに対して不透明な熱可塑性壁部を持つてい
る。このような融点または溶融温度範囲は、例え
ば示差熱分析によつて決めることができる。
無菌接続を形成するため該導管の不透明壁部
は、ともに対面接触せしめられる。不透明壁部
は、該壁部を一所に溶融しそして該溶融した壁部
に孔を開くのに十分な放射エネルギーに曝露され
る。これは導管の内部間にシールされた連通を形
成する。
不透明な熱可塑性壁部は、導管の端部を形成す
る透明な剛直なハウジングによつてその周囲を支
持されている。該導管の残部は所望により可撓性
にしてもよい。該剛直なハウジングは透明で、こ
の操作で使用される特定の放射エネルギー条件下
で本質的に軟化しない材料から製作される。一体
に対面接触させて壁部を配置したとき放射エネル
ギーは該不透明壁部を囲繞しそして防護する透過
性ハウジングを具合よく通過することができ、そ
のため融点へ加熱されるのは、不透明壁部を支持
し保護する透明なハウジングではなくて、この不
透明の壁部である。
不透明な壁部が溶融するとき、該壁部は単一の
シールされた塊に融合し、そして、この溶融によ
り溶融した不透明な熱可塑性壁部に中心孔が形成
される。不透明壁部の外面に付着している如何な
るバクテリヤも該溶融した塊内に捕捉されそして
該不透明壁部の溶融温度にさらされて具合よく滅
菌される。該溶融温度は、好ましくは220℃ない
し250℃のオーダーである。
放射エネルギーは、所望により可視光線、赤外
線、紫外線もしくは高周波エネルギー手段によつ
て該システムへ加えることができる。「不透明」
なる語句は、該壁部がそれに照射される特定の放
射エネルギーの大部分を吸収するように適合して
いることを意味する。「透明」なる語句は、加え
られた放射エネルギーの少量だけが吸収されるこ
とを意味する。集中した赤外線放射エネルギーを
使用することが特に望ましい。
放射エネルギーを与えるために所望によりレー
ザー光線も使用することができる。
不透明壁部には、該不透明壁部が一体にシール
されるときの中心孔の形成を容易にするため、一
軸もしくは二軸配向により、もしくは半径方向の
応力分布を形成することによつて前以つて応力を
発生させてもよい。また凝集力によつて中心孔が
形成するようにすれば、応力の発生していない壁
部を使用することもできる。
図面を参照すると、第1図は一対の導管端部の
正面図であり、導管の図示しない端部は一対の血
液バツグもしくはその類似物に接続することがで
き、図示の端部は本発明に係る不透明な熱可塑性
壁部を支持する一対のハウジングでそれぞれ終わ
つている。
第2図は第1図に図示した導管端部の一方の、
一部を縦断面にした拡大図である。
第3図は不透明壁部に対面接触をもたらすよう
に該壁部を一体に接合した後の第1図の二つの導
管端部を示す正面図であり、さらに該壁部を一体
に溶融し、そして孔を開口するために該不透明壁
部を十分な放射エネルギーにさらす工程を図解的
に示している。
第4図は前述の放射エネルギーにさらす工程以
前の第3図の構造の拡大縦断面図である。
第5図は放射エネルギーにさらす工程を終了し
た後の第3図の構造の一部分の拡大縦断面図であ
る。
図面を参照すると、導管10,12は、慣用の
血液バツグ17,19もしくは他の容器にそれぞ
れの一端が接続される、可撓性部分14,16を
含むことが図示されている。
ハウジング18,20は、ポリカーボネート材
料のような透明な高融点プラスチツク材料から製
作される。各々のハウジングは、チユーブ14ま
たは16の内孔と連通する中空の内側室21と、
銃剣状部材22およびスロツト24を形成してい
る。銃剣状部材22およびスロツト24の両方
は、ハウジング上に非対称に位置し、その結果
各々の銃剣状部材22は、一般に永久的なスナツ
プ嵌合関係に同一構造のハウジングの対応スロツ
ト24内に嵌合することができる。各々の銃剣状
部材22は、あご26の引掛り作用によつてスロ
ツト24内に保持される。従つて一対のハウジン
グ18,20を接続するとき、これらは大きな努
力をもつて取り外されるだけである。各々の銃剣
状部材22の拡大部分28は、銃剣状部材22が
後方へ撓む能力を減少させることによつて、ハウ
ジングの分離をより一層困難にするため、相手側
のハウジングのスロツト24の内壁を押圧するよ
うな寸法にすることが望ましい。
各々のハウジング18,20は、少なくとも
200℃の溶融温度を有する熱可塑性材料から製作
された不透明壁部30を支持する。
例えばレクサンのようなポリカーボネート材
料、もしくはユニオン・カーバイド社のユーデル
またはレイデルのようなポリスルフオン材料を使
用することができる。またポリエーテルスルフオ
ン材料も使用することができる。
熱可塑性の不透明壁部30は、不透明とするた
めカーボンブラツクのような充填剤を一般に含有
する。しかしながら使用される放射エネルギーの
吸収剤である他の所望の充填剤、例えば酸化鉄、
二酸化マンガンもしくはこれらの類似物もカーボ
ンブラツクの代替物として使用することができ
る。
不透明な熱可塑性壁部30は、好ましくはその
周縁部分よりも中心部分が薄くなつている円板で
あることが示されている。円板30は、超音波シ
ールもしくはその類似手段によつてその周縁でハ
ウジングのくぼみ34内に保持され、また第4図
に示されているように、対面している一対の不透
明壁部の間の良好な加圧接触を容易にするため、
僅かに外側に膨れているのが示されている。環状
溝33は、透明なハウジング内に不透明円板が組
み立てられたとき壁部を形成するプラスチツクが
流動するための余地を与える。
第4図はまた、銃剣状部材22が、不透明壁部
が一所に押圧され、それぞれのハウジングにより
保護された態様で取り囲まれるように、それぞれ
のハウジング間の接続を形成するように、どのよ
うにして相手側のハウジングの対向スロツト24
内に嵌合しているかを示している。
ハウジング18,20が接続された後、該ハウ
ジングは使用された特定の不透明壁部によつて吸
収される種類の放射エネルギーによつて照射され
る。特に赤外線は、放射エネルギーの一つの望ま
しい種類である。例えばこれは楕円反射鏡を有す

30を好ましくは10ないし20秒で急速に加熱し、
それぞれの壁部30を一所に溶融し、そして応力
の助けまたは単なる凝集力によつて壁部30を貫
通する孔36を形成するに必要な赤外線を密接す
る壁部分30の中心に集中させることができる。
壁部に捕捉されたバクテリヤは、壁部30をそ
の溶融温度に加熱することによつて死滅させら
れ、そしてさらに壁部30の溶融した材料が再硬
化するときに捕捉される。これは無菌流路21間
に接続の形成をもたらし、さらに該流路における
無菌性の継続的な維持が保証される。
溶融した壁部30は、孔36の周囲に溶着密閉
を形成するように一所に溶融し、流路の無菌性の
破れを阻止する。同時にそれぞれの膜壁部30の
間のシール線38は、それぞれのハウジング1
8,20の間の一般に永久的な接続によつて機械
的な破断から防護される。
別法として、高周波エネルギーもしくはその類
似媒体を放射エネルギーとして使用することを望
むならば、不透明壁部30を可塑化ポリ塩化ビニ
ルで製作し、一方ハウジング18,20の残余の
部分は、高周波エネルギーに対して比較的不活性
なプラスチツク材料、例えば該ハウジングが高周
波もしくは他の高エネルギーの、高周波放射電場
にさらされたとき著しく加熱されないポリプロピ
レン、ポリエチレン、ポリ(塩化ビニル−塩化ビ
ニリデン)、もしくはこれらに類似した材料で製
作することができる。
したがつて、本発明によつて、本発明に係るそ
れぞれのハウジング18,20を支持する個々の
バツグからの導管を単に接続するだけによつて例
えば充満したバツグと空の血液バツグとの間に無
菌接続を形成することができる。接続されたハウ
ジングは、不透明壁部を溶融するため、例えば約
15秒間集中赤外線に単に曝光し、該壁部を一体に
溶融し、そして該壁部を貫通して孔を形成するこ
とができる。無菌接続はこのようにして完了し、
該接続部を通つて充満した血液バツグ中の血液の
一部分を使用のため空のバツグに移行させること
ができる。この後該バツグは、バクスター、トラ
ベノール、ラボラトリーズ、インコーポレイテツ
ドのフエンウオール部門によつて販売されている
ヘマトロン加熱シール器で血液バツグからハウジ
ング18,20へ向かつて延びている可撓性導管
14,16の一方もしくは両方を加熱シールする
ことにより、常法に従つて切り離すことができ
る。次いで血液バツグは使用する所望の場所へ、
もしくは長期保存へ戻すため運搬することができ
る。
上述の説明は例示の目的のみによつて提示され
たものであり、特許請求の範囲に規定された本発
明の範囲を制限することを意図するものではな
い。

第1図は一対の導管端部の正面図であり、第2
図は一方の導管端部の拡大縦断面図、第3図は不
透明壁部を対面接触させた二つの導管端部の正面
図、第4図は放射エネルギー照射前の導管の拡大
縦断面図、第5図は放射エネルギー照射後の導管
の拡大縦断面図である。 10,12は導管、14,16はチユーブ、1
7,19は血液バツグ、18,20はハウジン
グ、21は中空内側室、22は銃剣状部材、24
はスロツト、30は不透明壁部である。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1 一対のシールされた導管の間に無菌的に接続
    を形成する方法であつて、 前記導管の透明な剛直ハウジング部分によつて
    周縁が支持されている放射エネルギーの高いパー
    セントを吸収する不透明な熱可塑性壁部を備えて
    いる一対の導管を前記不透明壁部が対面接触する
    ように連結し、 前記ハウジングの外側から前記透明な剛直ハウ
    ジング部分を通つて、前記不透明壁部を一所に溶
    融しそして溶融した壁部を貫通する孔を開くのに
    十分な放射エネルギーを前記対面接触した不透明
    壁部に照射し、前記導管の内部間にシールされた
    連通を形成することを特徴とする前記方法。 2 前記導管の内部が無菌である特許請求の範囲
    第1項の方法。 3 前記熱可塑性壁部の溶融温度が少なくとも
    200℃である特許請求の範囲第2項の方法。 4 前記ハウジング部分は、溶融した不透明な壁
    部を機械的応力から保護するため、該ハウジング
    部分の各々の不透明壁部分を対面接触させた位置
    で同一構造のハウジング部分を一般に永久的に連
    結するための手段を備えている特許請求の範囲第
    3項の方法。 5 前記放射エネルギーが赤外線である特許請求
    の範囲第4項の方法。 6 前記不透明な熱可塑性壁部が10ないし20秒間
    前記赤外線に露光される特許請求の範囲第5項の
    方法。 7 一対のシールされた導管の間に無菌的に接続
    を形成するための接続部材であつて、前記各導管
    の端部分へ接続された、放射エネルギーの透過に
    対して透明な材料でつくられた中空ハウジングを
    備え、前記ハウジングの中空な内部はハウジング
    壁によつて外部からシールされており、前記ハウ
    ジング壁の一部分は、放射エネルギーの高パーセ
    ントを吸収する不透明な壁部を含み、該不透明な
    壁部は透明なハウジングの残余の部分に対してシ
    ールされており、該不透明壁部は熱可塑性材料か
    らつくられており、そして前記接続部材は他方の
    導管へ接続された同一構造の対応する接続部材へ
    前記不透明壁部を対面接触させて一般に永久的に
    連結するための手段を備え、前記接続部材は前記
    対応する接続部材へそれぞれの不透明壁部を対面
    接触させて連結し、前記ハウジング壁の透明部分
    を通つて外部から対面接触している前記不透明壁
    部へ放射エネルギーを照射して一体に溶融し、該
    不透明壁部を貫通してそれぞれのハウジング内部
    間を連通する孔を開くことができるようになつて
    いることを特徴とする前記接続部材。 8 前記連結手段は、前記ハウジングの一端から
    突出する銃剣状部材と、前記他方の導管に支持さ
    れた対応する接続部材の前記銃剣状部材を受け入
    れるため前記ハウジングの他端に設けられたスロ
    ツトからなる特許請求の範囲第7項の接続部材。 9 前記銃剣状部材は、該部材の一方の側にあご
    を有し、そして前記一方の側から離れる方向への
    前記銃剣状部材の運動を制限するための補強部材
    が設けられている特許請求の範囲第8項の接続部
    材。 10 前記不透明な熱可塑性壁部が少なくとも
    200℃の溶融温度を有する材料で製作されている
    特許請求の範囲第9項の接続部材。 11 前記透明なハウジングは医療用液体容器に
    接続するための可撓性チユーブの一端とシール連
    通している特許請求の範囲第10項の接続部材。 12 前記医療用液体容器が血液バツグである特
    許請求の範囲第11項の接続部材。 13 前記不透明壁部は、該不透明壁部が放射エ
    ネルギーによつて溶融温度に加熱されたとき前記
    壁部を貫通する孔を開くことを容易にするため、
    応力が与えられている特許請求の範囲第7項の接
    続部材。 14 前記ハウジング壁の不透明壁部は中心部分
    が周辺部分より薄くなつた円板形部材よりなる特
    許請求の範囲第7項の接続部材。 15 前記円板形部材は前記不透明壁部の対面接
    触を容易にするため外側へ弓なりになつている特
    許請求の範囲第14項の接続部材。
