DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention This invention relates to novel compositions for topical application for use in the treatment and alleviation of various disease symptoms of the skin and mucous membranes.

The formulations are formulated into forms suitable for topical application to the skin, mucous membranes, and other tissues, such as ointments, lotions, solutions, dental preparations, and the like. For dental use, the formulation may be in the form of a toothpaste. The new compositions are particularly effective in treating eczema, skin lesions, skin pruritus, and mucosal cancers.

The composition is effective in treating acne.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to novel compositions for topical application for use in the alleviation and treatment of various diseases of the skin, mucous membranes and other tissues. The composition is or consists of an extract of Polygonum aviculare, hereinafter referred to as Polygonum, mixed in a suitable physiologically acceptable medium. Such compositions include various natural oils, mineral oils, alcohols and aqueous extracts supported on non-oily carriers which provide the desired fluidity of the formulation, such as polyalkylenes, glycerol, vegetable mucilages or gums. It will be done. The composition may be used in a toothpaste base of conventional composition. The composition may be mixed with a suitable carrier.

Example 1 Polygonum roots were dried and finely ground. Ten grams of dried roots were extracted with 200 grams of petrolatum for 3 to 5 minutes at high temperature, cooled and dried under pressure. The ointment formed was used to treat skin itching.

Example 3 Polygonum roots, stems and leaves were dried and ground.

Extracted at high temperature for 8 minutes (extracting 10 grams with 50 grams of olive oil) to remove plant residues. The formed liquid ointment was ready for use.

Example 4 Polygonum leaves were dried and crushed. Twenty grams were extracted with 80 mA ethanol under reflux, and the extract was aliquoted. The alcohol concentration of the solution was increased to 45% by adding water and was used for the treatment of aphthous ulcers. Good results were obtained after several days of application three times a day.

Example 5 Polygonum leaves and stems were dried and finely ground. Ten grams were extracted with 70 rrfl almond oil for 3 minutes at high temperature to remove plant residues. The ointment was prepared for use.

Example 6 A toothpaste was prepared from 50 parts of lime powder, 6 parts of soap powder, 34 parts of glycerin, 0.25 parts of saccharin, 1 part of peppermint oil, and 15 parts of the lotion of Example 4. The toothpaste was found to be effective in treating aphthous ulcers and in treating gum bleeding.

The ointment thus obtained was used for complete healing, for the treatment of eczema, and especially for the treatment of skin lesions on the lower part of the feet.

Good results were obtained after multiple applications.

When various ointments were tested, they were found to be effective in treating and alleviating eczema, skin damage, skin itching, etc. when applied topically to diseased areas of the skin.

1. A composition for topical application to the skin, mucous membranes, or other tissues, characterized in that it contains an extract of plant parts of A. olygonum aviculare as an active ingredient. (2) The composition according to claim 1, wherein the extract is from roots, branches and/or leaves of plants. (3) Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the extract is extracted in an oily substance, an organic solvent, or water.
