Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a photosensitive body which obviates the exfoliation of the end of a photosensitive layer from the end of a conductive cylindrical substrate by forming a small-diameter part of a very small width to the end of said substrate and forming the photosensitive layer over the entire surface of the substrate except the small- diameter part. CONSTITUTION:The small-diameter part 4 which is smaller in diameter by a slight difference (a) from the outside diameter of the conductive cylindrical substrate 1 consisting of an aluminum alloy or the like and has the very small width (b) is formed to the end of said substrate. The photosensitive layer 2 is formed over the entire surface of the substrate except said part and the end of the photosensitive layer 2 is tapered 3. The direct contact of the end of the photosensitive layer 2 with a metallic base is obviated even if the photosensitive body is held erected on said base and therefore, the generation of cracking, etc. at the end is obviated and the exfoliation from the substrate 1 does not arise. Since step (a) and the width (b) are very small, the photosensitive body mounted to a device is substantially capable of providing the same function as the function in the case in which the entire surface of the substrate is coated with the photosensitive layer. Both the step (a) and width (b) are preferably about 0.2-1mm.

In such a photoreceptor, the adhesion between the substrate and the photoreceptor layer must be good, but when the photoreceptor is handled, its edges often come into contact with various objects, making it easy for external mechanical forces to be applied. When the photosensitive layer is attached to a device and used, the edges tend to be distorted by external force due to cleaning blades, etc., and as a result, the edges of the photosensitive layer tend to peel off from the substrate, resulting in white spots, which is a fatal defect in the output image. Exclusion may cause defects.

As a means to prevent the end of the photosensitive layer from peeling off from the substrate, as shown in FIG. A taper 3 is provided at the end of the layer 2. Furthermore, a method has been proposed in which a groove is formed in the surface near the end of the substrate so that it becomes gradually deeper toward the end of the substrate, and the end of the photosensitive layer is located in this groove. -1330

In particular, in the case of a photosensitive layer made of a selenium-based material, the strength against mechanical force is low, so that even the application of a slight force causes cracking at the edges of the photosensitive layer, causing peeling. For example, even if a cylindrical photoreceptor is placed upright on a metal or wooden stand, cracks may occur.Furthermore, when forming a photosensitive layer by vapor deposition, a mask ring is placed in contact with the edge of the substrate. Cracks may occur when removing the mask ring after vapor deposition.

The present invention has been made in view of the above points, and has the same function as a photosensitive layer coated on substantially the entire surface of a cylindrical conductive substrate, and in addition, An object of the present invention is to provide a photoreceptor that does not peel off from a substrate.

The object of the present invention is to form a small diameter part with a minute width at the end of a cylindrical conductive substrate, having a slight step with the outer diameter of the substrate,
This is achieved by forming a photosensitive layer on the entire surface of the substrate except for the small diameter portion to form a photoreceptor. By providing such a small diameter portion, the photoreceptor exhibits the same function as a photoreceptor in which a photosensitive layer is formed on the entire surface of the substrate, but in reality, a photosensitive layer is formed on the edge of the substrate. Therefore, a photoreceptor can be obtained in which cracking and peeling at the ends of the photosensitive layer, which tend to occur at the ends of the substrate, do not occur.

FIG. 1 is a sectional view of a main part of a photoreceptor according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which the end of a cylindrical conductive substrate l made of an aluminum alloy or the like has a diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the substrate by a minute step a. A small diameter portion 4 having a very small width is formed, and a photosensitive layer 2 is formed on the entire surface of the substrate except for this portion. The end of the photosensitive layer 2 is tapered 3. In such a configuration, for example, even if the photoreceptor is placed upright on a metal stand, the edge of the photosensitive layer will not come into direct contact with the object.
Since no mechanical force is applied, cracks do not occur at the edges of the photosensitive layer, and peeling from the substrate does not occur. Moreover, the small diameter portion 4 on which the photosensitive layer is not formed
Since the width of the step Ma1 is very small, when mounted on an apparatus, the photoreceptor can perform substantially the same function as when the entire surface of the substrate is covered with a photosensitive layer.

The smaller the width of the small diameter portion 40 is, the more desirable it is, but as b becomes smaller, the disadvantage arises that the end of the photosensitive layer tends to come into contact with other objects. Furthermore, it is desirable that the diameter of the small diameter portion 4 be small, and therefore the step a should be large, but if a becomes too large, there is a greater risk that the end of the photosensitive layer will come into contact with other objects. Although it depends on the dimensions of the substrate and the thickness of the photosensitive layer, the width of the step 31 is both 0.
.. A support of about 2 to 1 fins is preferred.

According to the present invention, a small diameter portion with a minute width is formed at the end of a cylindrical conductive substrate, and a photosensitive layer is formed on the entire surface of the substrate except for this small diameter portion, thereby forming a photoreceptor. By adopting such a structure, it is possible to obtain a photoreceptor that has the same function as a case where a photosensitive layer is formed on the entire surface of the substrate up to the ends of the substrate, and in which the end of the photosensitive layer does not peel off from the end of the substrate. For example, it is possible to contribute to miniaturization of electrophotographic devices.
