Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce easily a branching D-type fiber having high quality by allowing two cut D-type fibers to face each other and coupling them by welding or matching oil. CONSTITUTION:A fiber base material 3 consisting of a core 1 and a clad 2 is worked preliminarily into a D-shape, and this base material is subjected to wire drawing at a proper temperature by an optical fiber draw bench 4 to produce the D-type fiber 5, and this D-type fiber 5 is cut to a proper length, and two cut D-type fibers 5 are matched back to back and are coupled with welding or matching oil.

(Prior art) In order to manufacture a branching type fiber, conventionally, the fiber is fixed to a substrate with an appropriate curvature using epoxy, and the fiber is polished together with the substrate from the core to the depth m. When the leaching from the fibers reached an appropriate value, the same fibers were made to face each other to form branched fibers.

(Problems with the prior art) The method described above requires a sophisticated polishing technique because it is necessary to control the polishing amount of the substrate to the order of several pm, and the polishing time is long, resulting in poor workability. Furthermore, there is a problem that the yield is very low.

As shown in FIG. 1, the method of the present invention involves processing a fiber base material 3 consisting of a core 1 and a cladding 2 into a D shape in advance, and heating this base material 3 at an appropriate temperature as shown in FIG. A D-type fiber 5 is created by drawing with an optical fiber drawing machine 4,
This D-type fiber 5 is cut to an appropriate length as shown in Fig. 3, and the two cut D-type fibers 5 are placed back to back as shown in Fig. 4 and joined by fusing or matting oil. This is what I did.

(Example) A preform having an outer diameter of 10φ and a core diameter of 3.3φ was processed into a D shape as a quartz base material 3 in which a branched fiber was attempted to be created using a quartz preform (GI) base material. In this case, the depth of grinding was set to 1 mm before the core 4.

This D-shaped preform base material 3 was drawn using a wire drawing Ia4. The temperature of the drawing furnace was 1850 degrees Celsius. As a result, a D-type fiber 5 having an outer diameter of 1504 m, a core diameter of 50 m, and an outer diameter d (FIG. 5) of 136#Lm was obtained. This D-type fiber 5 was cut into a length of 100 mm, two D-type fibers 5 were placed back to back as shown in FIG. 4, and then fused together to create a branching type fiber.
