The present invention relates to a method for producing titanium carbide, and its purpose is to provide a method for producing pure titanium carbide easily and at low cost. Titanium carbide is a type of intermetallic compound with an interstitial structure, and has a very high melting point, high hardness,
Characterized by high electrical conductivity and optical opacity. Because of the above-mentioned characteristic properties, this compound has been used as a hard material for cermets and as a conductive material. Nevertheless, it cannot be said that an appropriate method for producing low-cost and pure titanium carbide powder has been established. Considering the use of relatively abundant titanium resources and its excellent physical properties, it is important to establish a manufacturing method to obtain inexpensive and pure powders of these compounds, whose applications are expected to expand further in the future. This can be said to be meaningful. From the above viewpoint, the present invention was discovered as a result of studying a new method for producing titanium carbide, and it is possible to produce titanium carbide with almost 100% purity as seen by X-rays at a very low cost. This is something that can be provided. Problems with the conventional titanium carbide manufacturing method will be explained below. Conventionally, there are various methods for producing this compound, but the raw materials are Ti metal and titanium hydride.
TiH 2 , titanium tetrachloride TiCl 4 and titanium oxide TiO 2
has been used. Of these raw materials, titanium oxide is the cheapest, while the others are an order of magnitude more expensive. There is a method of making a carbide by directly reacting the above raw material with carbon at high temperature, and in this case, metallic titanium or titanium hydride, which decomposes into metallic titanium during heating, is used. This manufacturing method uses titanium metal or titanium hydride, so it has the disadvantage of being very expensive. Another manufacturing method uses titanium oxide as a raw material, in which case it must be reduced once and then turned into titanium carbide. Carbon is commonly used as the reducing agent. The carbon is further utilized as part of the constituent elements. This manufacturing method using titanium oxide and carbon is simple and inexpensive, but if there is a lot of carbon, carbon impurities will be present, and if there is little carbon, unreacted titanium oxide or reduced titanium oxide will remain, resulting in pure titanium carbide. is difficult to obtain. Furthermore, the manufacturing process is easily affected by the particle size and mixability of carbon and titanium oxide, and unreacted titanium oxide,
Reduced titanium oxide and unreacted carbon tend to remain. Furthermore, since titanium tetrachloride easily evaporates as a gas, titanium carbide can be obtained by reacting it with hydrocarbon + H 2 gas. Although this production method yields very pure and high quality titanium carbide, it has the disadvantage of being expensive. The present invention focuses on the method of reducing titanium oxide and converting it into carbide, which is the lowest cost among the above manufacturing methods, and makes further improvements thereto. It takes advantage of the conventional advantages and eliminates the disadvantages. This is what I did. The method for producing titanium carbide of the present invention will be explained below along with Examples. Titanium oxide has two types of transformation: a low-temperature anatase type and a high-temperature rutile type. Therefore, the anatase type has an average particle size of 0.1 μm, 0.5 μm, and 1.0 μm.
Three types of titanium oxide and rutile type with an average particle size of 0.5
We investigated a method for producing titanium carbide using μm titanium oxide. Also, the particle size of carbon powder is
Thicknesses of 0.01 μm, 0.2 μm and 0.5 μm were used. The above-mentioned titanium oxide and carbon powder were mixed according to the following chemical reaction formula: TiO 2 +3C→TiC+2CO at a carbon ratio 3 times that of TiO 2 by mole to prepare a mixed powder. The mixing was done dry for 1 hour using a mortar type grinder. Next, the mixed powder was placed in a container made of alumina or carbon, and heated in a tubular alumina furnace tube using an electric furnace. Ar gas and Ar+CH 4 gas at 1 atm were flowed through the alumina core tube. The phase of the heat-treated powder was identified by X-ray diffraction. In addition to TiC, the fired powder contains unreacted
TiO 2 and reduced titanium oxide (though it cannot be completely identified, it is thought to be a reduced product of titanium oxide) are produced in various proportions. The table shows the results of synthesizing titanium carbide TiC using the above manufacturing method using various manufacturing conditions.

意義なものといえる。[Table] In the raw material composition section of the same table, the number written after the chemical formula indicates the average particle size of the powder. Also chemical formula
A and R in front of TiO2 stand for anatase type and rutile type, respectively. Furthermore, TiO 2 R described in the section of X-ray diffraction results indicates a compound obtained by reducing TiO 2 shown above. The description in the column of X-ray diffraction results in the table indicates that only the crystal phases listed in the column were detected. Therefore, within the scope of the present invention, it can be seen that the material is substantially composed of a single phase of TiC. That is, the purity is approximately 100% in terms of X-rays, which is sufficient for practical use. Below, the experimental results of this example under various conditions will be examined based on the same table. In experiments No. 1 to 3, we first investigated the effect of TiO 2 particle size. From the results of X-ray diffraction, it is clear that some unreacted TiO 2 was contained, but it is desirable that the amount be 0.5 μm or less. No. 4 is the result of a study on the rutile type of TiO 2 , and as can be seen from comparison with No. 2 and No. 4, the anatase type is clearly more reactive and advantageous. The proportion of TiC in the product was overwhelmingly higher in No. 2. From the above results, it is concluded that anatase type TiO 2 having a particle size of 0.5 μm or less may be used as the starting material for TiC synthesis. Nos. 5 and 6 investigate the effect of carbon particle size. Comparing No. 5, 6 and No. 2 in combination,
It is clear that the reaction does not proceed sufficiently with carbon having the same particle size as TiO 2 of 0.5 μm, and it is clear that carbon smaller than TiO 2 is required. This clearly indicates that the carbon needs to be small and surround the TiO 2 particles with good contact. Therefore, the carbon has a smaller particle size than the TiO 2 particles, and is preferably as thin as possible so that it can surround the TiO 2 particles without any gaps. No. 7 to No. 10 examine the effect of firing temperature. It is almost impossible to synthesize TiC at 1300°C and requires a temperature of 1350°C or higher.
Even at 1350°C, a small amount of unreacted TiO 2 remains. This can be made to be almost 100% TiC in terms of X-rays by devising the atmosphere as described later. The firing temperature may be set to any high temperature. However, from the viewpoint of synthesizing the powder, the temperature should be below its melting point (3140°C). Nos. 11-14 showed the effect of methane on TiC synthesis. At 1300℃, the proportion of TiC in the product increases compared to the case without CH 4 , but it is completely TiC
I can't do it alone. However, at 1350°C, if CH 4 was not mixed, unreacted TiO 2 remained, but this can be improved and completely converted to TiC.
In the case of TiC synthesis, it is advantageous to increase the mixing ratio of CH 4 as much as possible for the reaction to proceed, but 100%
Since CH 4 contains a small amount of carbon, it is better to create an atmosphere mixed with an inert gas.
As for the inert gas, only Ar showed results, but other He,
The principle is exactly the same for Ne, Kr, Xe, etc., but
Ar is advantageous from a cost standpoint. As explained above, the method for synthesizing pure TiC powder is to use inexpensive TiO 2 powder and carbon as starting materials, and to select one whose crystal system and particle size are controlled, and to synthesize it in an inert gas atmosphere containing methane. The method for producing titanium carbide of the present invention that undergoes heat treatment includes:
As a method for synthesizing the TiC powder described above, which has a number of physical characteristics, it can be said to be industrially significant from the viewpoint of cost and ease of production.
