Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the isomerization of a xylene and the dealkylation of ethyl benzene simultaneously and efficiently, by bringing the xylene containing the ethylbenzene into contact with a mordenite zeolite containing rhenium in the presence of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: A xylene mixture containing ethylbenzene is brought into contact with a mordenite zeolite containing rhenium in the presence of hydrogen to isomerize m- and o-xylenes which are in little industrial demand to p-xylene of great demand as a raw material for synthetic fibers. At the same time, the ethylbenzene is mainly dealkylated to benzene, converted into other useful aromatic hydrocarbons and removed. The mordenite zeolite preferably contains hydrogen ions and/or a hydrogen ion precursor (ammonium ions) in an amount of 0.5 equivalent or less based on one gram-atom aluminum.
