Abstract
PURPOSE: When xylene containing ethylbenzene is isomerized in liquid phase using a catalyst of H type mordenite, a specific amount of benzene is made to coexist to inhibit the side-reactions accompanied by the isomerization and increase the selectively of the isomerization.
CONSTITUTION: When, e.g., x-xylene and o-xylene are isomerized to p-xylene, which is industrially valuable as a raw material for polyester fiber, xylene containing ethylbenzene is brought into contact with a catalyst of an H type mordenite in liquid phase in the presence of more than 10wt%, preferably less than double, based on the ethylbenzene and xylenes, of benzene, preferably at 150W350°C. This process characteristically inhibits the disproportionation between ethylbenzene and xylenes and the transalkylation between ethylbenzene and xylenes to improve the loss of xylenes and ethylbenzene remarkably.
