Abstract
Alkylbenzenes for example xylenes, are isomerised in the liquid or vapour phase using a catalyst comprising FU-1 zeolite modified with a cation having a high ratio (>/= 2) of charge to ionic radius, for example magnesium rare earths. Optionally the feedstock contains up to 25% ethylbenzene, part at least of which is converted to para-xylene. The process may be carried out in the presence or absence of hydrogen.
