Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a pipe with a high specific elastic modulus by feeding a gaseous mixture of BCl3 with H2 onto a titanium pipe heated by condensing light from an infrared lamp under reduced pressure to boride the pipe. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous mixture consisting of BCl3 and H2 in 3:1 molar ratio is allowed to flow into a furnace core tube made of transparent quartz from one end, and the internal pressure of the furnace is regulated to 10-200Torr by evacuation from the other end with a rotary pump. A titanium pipe in the surface is then heated by condensing light from an infrared lamp. When the temp. of the pipe reaches 900-1,200 deg.C, the pipe is borided. Thus, a titanium boride-boron pipe with a high specific elastic modulus is obtd.
