Abstract

PURPOSE:To contrive to increase the output capacity of a power converter by variably controlling the output current limiting value with an electric signal relative to the temperature of a semiconductor element. CONSTITUTION:The temperature detector 23 of a thyristor 141 produces an electric signal relating to any of the junction temperature T1 of the thyristor 141, the temperature TF of a cooler 142 and the temperature TA of coolant. The temperature of the thyristor 141 will rise DELTATJ=P1/(RTH1+RTH2) with respect to the the temperature TA as to the thermal resistance RTH1 from the junction of the thyristor 141 to the cooler 142 and the thermal resistance RTH2 from the cooler 142 to the coolant. Even if any point of the equivalent circuit is detected in the temperature by the detector 23, the junction temperature TJ of the thyristor 141 can be protected within the maximum allowable temperature. When the current limiting value Ia is variably controlled by the detector 23 as described above, the output capacity of the power converter can be increased by utilizing the margin of the current limiting value caused by the influence of the output frequency F and the temperature TA of the coolant.
