Abstract

PURPOSE:To protect a semiconductor chip against an overcurrent and to set the allowable value of the overcurrent to a desired value by disposing a superconducting material attached with magnetic means on part of a current path from the electrode pad of a semiconductor chip to an external terminal. CONSTITUTION:A conductive member 17 made of a superconducting material is clamped between an inner lead 13a and a lead pad 13b. A magnetic unit 18 is secured adjacent to the material 17. When a normal signal current is input from an external terminal 14 at the intrinsic critical temperature or less of the material, the material 17 becomes zero of its resistance value. When an overcurrent is input from the terminal 14 to exceeds the critical current of the material, the resistance value of the member 17 becomes a predetermined value larger than zero. Thus, the overcurrent does not flow to a semiconductor chip 12 as it is, thereby protecting the function. Further, the critical current value can be regulated in response to the type of the chip by the magnetic field of the unit 18.
