Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the occurence of breaking, etc. and increase the line speed for preparing reinforced optical fibers, by applying the ultrsonic wave vibration to a die in passing plural filaments impregnated with a resin in parallel with the periphery of an optical fiber through the die.
CONSTITUTION: Plural continuous glass filaments 4 are passed through a resin bath 5 impregnated with a liquid resin 6 and through a guide apparatus 7 in parallel with the periphery of a primarily coated optical fiber 2 and passed through a die 9, to which the ultrasonic wave vibration is applied by ultrasonic wave vibrators (10a) and (10b). The vibration in the axial direction of the optical fiber 2 is repeated in the die 9. The resin 6 is permeated into the respective parts in the glass filaments 4 to fill the voids, etc. to be the cause for the defective strength, and the excessive resin is removed. The filaments 4 and optical fiber 2 are collected and molded by the die 9, passed through a molding machine 11 to cure the resin 6 by a heater 12 and give the desired reinforced optical fiber 13.
