Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a reinforced optical fiber of high quality by using a rotator as a metallic mold for introducing and heat curing an optical fiber coated with a reinforcing layer composed of reinforcing fibers and thermo- setting resin.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 10 is passed through a die 2 at high speed together with many reinforcing fibers 11 impregnated with uncured thermosetting resin 12 and arranged around the fiber 10. the fiber 10 having a reinforcing layer 14 formed at the outside through the die 2 enters the peripheral groove 6 of a rotator 4 having an open part covered with a running belt 5, and the resin 12 of the layer 14 is cured thoroughly with the rotator 4 and the belt 5 heated to a high temp. with heaters 8, 9 before the fiber 10 leaves the groove 6. Thus, a reinforced optical fiber 13 is obtd. The relative friction between the layer 14 and the rotator 4 and that between the layer 14 and the belt 5 are reduced extremely. As a result, the surface of the layer 14 is not roughened, a strain causing microbend is not produced in the fiber 10, and the fibers 11 are not cut.
