Abstract

CONSTITUTION: In forming a coating lyer for preventing damage on the periphery, an optical fiber (B) obtained by spinning a preform rod (A) is passed through a coating bath 2. A liquid coating material 20, e.g. a rubber or plastic, containing a curing agent is introduced from a supply path 8 into the bottom tank part 6 of the coating bath 2 under pressure, led from a gap 19 of a die 18 constitued of the top die (18a) and the botttom die (18b) to the upper tank part 5 of the coating bath 2 and circulated through an opening 12 and circulating path 9. The optical fiber (B) is held at the center of the die 18 in passing through the die 18 by the pressure of the coating solution flowing through a gap 19 and the top die (18a) to form a coating layer of uniform thickness without damage in contact with the die 18, dried and cured in a furnace 3.
