PURPOSE:To prevent slack owing to the heat treatment of a steel wire rod and make draw-out speed constant by detecting the slack generated in the steel wire rod and controlling the number of revolutions of a rotary drum at the time of drawing out and cooling the steel wire rod which is wound on the rotary drum and is heat treated. CONSTITUTION:A steel wire rod 2 is wound plural times on a rotary drum 7 of a heat treatment furnace 4, and is heat treated in a salt bath 6, after which it is conducted into a water tank 13 by guide rollers 12, 12a. When a slack is generated in the wire rod 2 between the guide rollers 12 and 12a, an arm 17 turns the roller 18 in contact with the wire rod 2 in an arrow direction, and from the rotating angle of a pulley 20 rotated by this, a deviation detector 21 detects the slack and emits a signal. A tachogenerator 23 detecting the slack from the fluctuation in the number of revolutions of the guide roller 12a emits a signal. From these signals, a controller 22 commands a driver 8 so as to rotate the drum at a proper rotating speed. Thereby, the rotation of the rotary drum in the salt bath 6 is controlled and stable tension is acted upon the wire rod 2, whereby the generation of slack is prevented.
