Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the tension to be applied upon optical fibers by providing plural pieces of optical fiber cores twisted and disposed at a constant pitch around a buffer layer 7 consisting of a material of extremely small Young's modulus. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber unit is contained in a pressure-resistant construction 2 of an optical submarine cable, and if the unit and the cable are held in tight adhesion with each other, the elongating and contracting movements of the cable and the unit will be the same. In the unit, optical fiber cores 1 twisted at a constant pitch around a buffer layer 7 consisting of a material of extremely small Young's modulus sink radially into the layer 7 when the unit is exerted with elongation, by which surplus length is produced and this results in that the elongation generated in the cores 1 is relieved. With such constitution, the tension to be applied upon the optical fiber cores is reduced.
