Abstract
PURPOSE: To always minimize fuel consumption by automatically following the changes of marine atmospheric conditions such as secular changes, tidal currents, winds and the like.
CONSTITUTION: The number of revolutions of a main machine, velocity of a vessel and a vane angle are measured by means of appropriate means, and measured values are inputted to a computer, allowing effective power and a wake coefficient to be calculated from the above measured values. Next, a curve indicating the relation between a main machine output and the number of revolutions of the main machine is evaluated taking the vessel velocity and the vane angle as parameters. By combining this curve and a curve indicating fuel consumption, the minimum curve for the fuel consumption is calculated. From this fuel consumption minimum curve, the main machine output, the number of revolutions of the main machine, the vane angle and the fuel consumption minimizing the fuel consumption to the required vessel speed are computed. The result obtained is transmitted to a main machine operating system, and the variable pitch propeller is operated such that the vessel sails at the minimum point of the fuel consumption.
