Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily produce a cold-forged article having high strength, by cutting a small-diametered billet, obtained by directly casting an aluminum alloy melt containing a specified amount of Mn and a small amount of Fe as an impurity, into pieces having a proper length, and cold-forging the cut pieces without heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An aluminum alloy melt containing 1.0W3.0wt% of Mn and up to 0.3wt% of Fe as an inevitable impurity is poured into a mold having a diameter of 155mm or less and rapidly cooled to directly produce a billet, having a diameter of 155mm or less, in which Mn is solid-solutioned. The obtained billet in this way is cut into pieces having a proper length and subjected to cold-forging without heat treatment. In this case, the cold-forgiability of the billet is excellent without necessity of heat treatment, and a cold-forged article having high strength is obtained.
