Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a cam shaft excellent in wear resistance, pitching resistance and scuffing resistance by chilling the whole circumference of a cam at the time of casting using a tree made by fixing solid bars to a pipe etc. CONSTITUTION:A tree 10 is formed by fixing proper number of solid bars or pipes on the outer circumference of a pipe 8 or a solid bar. This tree 10 is fixed in a sand mold and cast iron is poured to cover the tree 10. Simultaneously with this casting, the whole circumference of the cam is chilled by a chiller provided in the sand mold. The cam shaft in which an oil passage is secured by the pipe 8 is taken out and after working the external surface, piercing is made at the place where the solid bar 9 is buried. Since this solid bar 9 is not hardened by chilling, an oil hole 5 is easily formed. This oil hole 5 is made to communicate to the oil passage 6 formed in the pipe 8.
