Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the observation and measurement of the conditions, temps., etc. of the surfaces of the ingot in a mold for continuous casting possible by providing through-holes communicating from the outside to the inside surface to said mold and inserting optical fibers therein. CONSTITUTION:Through-holes 2, 5 continuous to a copper plate 1 and a backup plate 4 constituting a copper-made mold for continuous casting are provided, and a transparent heat resistant material 9 of quartz, sapphire, etc. is disposed in the opening part of the inside surface of the mold. A convex lens 13 is placed on the inner side thereof, and plural optical fibers 11 are disposed. The surface condition of the ingot in the mold is imaged with the convex lens, and is transmitted to the outside by the fibers 11. After this is converted to an electric signal, the image is reproduced by a video means such as CRT, whereby the condition of the ingot surface is made observable. Similarly, the surface temp. of the continuously cast ingot in the mold is measured by the fibers 11 and from these, the thickness of the solidified shell of the ingot is estimated and the rates of cooling of the mold, drawing of the ingot, etc. are controlled, whereby the occurrence of trouble such as breakout and the like of the ingot is prevented.
