PURPOSE:To detect a line mark exactly without being influenced by a black noise, by recognizing a shape of the line mark. CONSTITUTION:A mark is detected in accordance with picture information of a presence expected area 14 of a line mark 10 whose length and width are L and B, respectively, to the right from a left end 12 of a slip. At first, length of an output 16 obtained by taking the longitudinal projection is equal to mark legnth L, if a picture signal of the mark 10 is normal.
