Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to decide automatically the direction of character lines on mail by providing a separate-postage-payment mark detection part that detects a separate-postage-payment mark on mail and a shape decision part that decides the unidirectional shape of the mark.
CONSTITUTION: The optical character reader has the 1st and 2nd read parts provided in the conveyance direction of mail. Output signal L of the 1st read part is let to character-line-direction deciding circuit 20, which consists of separate-postage- payment mark detection part 201 detecting separate-postage-payment mark E on the mail, shape decision part 202 deciding the unidirectional shape of the mail and gate circuit 203. Detection part 201 calculates the coordinate of the circular black block of mark E within a scan to detect mark E being at the fixed position of the mail, thereby outputting signal H to circuit 203. Decision part 202, on the other hand, compares the length and radius in the fixed direction of the black block of mark E to each other to decide the shape and then input its decision signal to circuit 203, which outputs a signal showing that the character line is in the fixed direction.
