Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The titled derivative of formula I (R1 is halogen; R2 is OH or alkanoyloxy).
EXAMPLE: 23-Chloro-23,4'-deoxy mycaminosyl tynololide diethylacetal.
USE: An antimicrobial agent having improved antimicrobial activity, particularly against Gram-negative bacteria.
PROCESS: A mycaminosyl tynololide of formula II (if necessary containing a derivative having protected aldehyde group and hydroxyl group at the 2'-position) is halogenated to the corresponding compound of formula III in which R3 is an aldehyde or protected aldehyde group and the 23-position is halogenated. The protecting group if contained is removed to give the compound of formula I.
