Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a very superior waterproof glass fiber by making an aqueous soln. of ester of metallic acid and polyols gel on the surface of a glass fiber to evenly coat each filament with a uniform film having a uniform thickness.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous soln. of ester of metallic acid such as chromic acid or manganic acid and glycol or the like is impregnated into a glass fiber and heated, whereby the soln. is uniformly stuck to the surface of each filament of the fiber as a film while gelling. By the gelling the solvent is evaporated without transfer, so the solute is also concd. without transfer, and concn. is caused on the surface of each internal filament of the glass fiber to form a uniform film. The fiber is then calcined. As a result, the gelled ester is thermally decomposed, and the metallic oxide film firmly adheres to the glass with a chemical bond. Thus, a waterproof glass fiber is manufactured.
