Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the display effect of an active matrix substrate having an electrode for driving which doubles as a reflecting plate by irradiating the surface of the substrate with laser beams or electron beams to form an uneven surface. CONSTITUTION:An Al-Si or Al layer for an electrode 8 for driving is formed on a semiconductor substrate 1 and irradiate with beams having 0.01-1MJ/cm<2> energy which does not sputter Al. The grains of the unirradiated layer are flat (a) and have a mirrorlike surface state. After the irradiation, the grains grow uneven (b) and large, so a diffused reflecting surface is formed and assumes a white surface color. The electrode is then formed by photoetching. When the layer is parallelly irradiated with beams at pitches almost corresponding to the spot diameter, a corrugated surface (c) is obtd. Light incident on the surface perpendicularly to the corrugated line from various angles is concentrically reflected upward to give a very bright surface.
