Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain acetylene black which has a chain structure, in which hydrochloric acid absorption is low, and excellent packing characteristics, by mixing acetylene with graphite, supplying the mixture to a pyrolysis furnace, and thermally decomposing the mixture in the presence of air or flame.
CONSTITUTION: Acetylene and graphite or easily graphitizable carbon in a mixed state are supplied to a pyrolysis furnace, and then thermally decomposed in the presence of air and/or flame. Finely divided high-purity graphite or easily graphitizable carbon having a particle size of 100 mesh or smaller is preferred. An example thereof is needle coke. The mixing ratio of graphite or easily graphitizable carbon to acetylene is 1W20wt%. When the ratio is below 1wt%, hydrochloric acid absorption can not be suppressed below 10cc/5g, and thus the packing characteristics of acetylene black can not be improved. When the ratio exceeds 20wt%, hydrochloric acid absorption can not be suppressed as well, and thus the purpose of this process can not be accomplished.
