Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high-precision, narrow-track-width magnetic head, suitable for a video tape recorder, at a high yield, by forming a mask consisting of >=2 layers on a core block and by etching the block stepwise while successively removing the mask from the outermost layer. CONSTITUTION:On a core block 1a made of a ferromagnetic material, a thin film 6 of titanium, etc., is formed and the 1st mask 6a is formed by photoetching, etc.,; and then the 2nd mask 7 is formed by using SiO2, etc., covering the 1st mask 6a, to a width greater than that of the mask 6a. Then, etching is performed by using the 2nd mask 7 to form the 1st groove 8 and after the mask 7 is removed with ammonium fluoride, etc., the 2nd groove 9 is formed by etching through using the 1st mask 6a, which is removed. Thus obtained core blocks 1a and 1b are joined together with a gap-length restricting member 4 to obtain the titled magnetic head.
