Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a metallic coating optical fiber which is small in not only a variation of the outside diameter but also thermal stress, by supplying an optical fiber, and a lot of long fibers having a coefficient of thermal expansion which is almost equal to that of said optical fiber to a hot chamber, and drawing them out from a thin hole. CONSTITUTION:A metallic coating fiber is obtained by providing an Al metallic coating layer 5 which has distributed a lot of long glass fibers having a coefficient of thermal expansion which is almost equal to that of an optical fiber 1, on the outside circumference of a quartz glass optical fiber 1 consisting of a core 2 and a clad 3. Its manufacture is performed as mentioned below. An Al molten metal is charged to a hot chamber 21 of a die 20, and an optical fiber 8 and a long glass fiber 4a are fed out to the outside from a thin hole 22 by a suitable feed means. In this way, a metallic coating optical fiber which is small in not only a variation of the outside diameter but also thermal stress is obtained.
