Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent any step in output and deteriorated perfomance of exhaust by separately controlling the optimum fuel injection rates for working cylinders and for idle cylinders to meet changes of intake air quantity on the working cylinder side and on the idle cylinder side when the number of the working cylinders is changed.
CONSTITUTION: When the number of working cylinders is changed, signals are inputted into a distribution rate arithmetic operational circuit 26, in response to the opening change of a shut-off valve 7 so that fuel distribution rate (work distribution rate) (α) can be calculated in proportion to the rate of intake air on both the actual working side and the idle side on the basis of the number of revolution of the engine. Though this distribution rate may gradually change with a lapse of time, injection rate oM and qS to the cylinders on the working side and on the idle side are to be instantaneously determined based upon this distribution rate α in response to each case by a fuel injection rate decision circuit 27 so that a proper air-to-fuel ratio may be achieved. In consequence, any unstable condition such that the air-to-fuel ratio is condensed or conversely rarefied momentarily during a switching phase, can be eliminated so that air mixture with a uniform air-to-fuel ratio can be fed into each cylinder.
