Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the cooling effect of a stern tube of a small ship by forming a through-hole along the direction of a flow of water in an exposed portion of the stern tube outside the ship so as to forcibly feed water into the stern tube.
CONSTITUTION: A water inlet port 5 is formed at a portion of a stern tube 6 which is forwardly of a bearing mounting portion and is exposed outside the ship. The water inlet port 8 extends through the stern tube 6 and is directed to the direction of a flow of water and slightly oblique to the direction of rotation of a propeller shaft. By this structure, water is forcibly fed into the stern tube from the water inlet port 8 by sailing of the ship to circulate around the propeller shaft 5, thereby cooling the propeller shaft effectively. Water thus fed into the stern tube is discharged sucessively from a groove 70 formed on an inner surface of a bearing member 7.
