Abstract

PURPOSE: To expand a pipe at high accuracy by inserting a pipe into a through hole of overlapped plural fins, and expanding the pipe after forming a flare at the end of the pipe that projects from the fins.
CONSTITUTION: A pipe 4 is inserted into a through hole 3 of plural fins 2 and its end is projected from a flange 2a of an end plate 2b. Under this state, an expander 5 made up of a pipe expanding device 6, a flare former 7 and a stripper 8 is lowered in the pipe 4. The ball part 10 of the expander 6 is pressed in and then the former 7 is pressed in while rotating. Since the ball part 10 is pressed only in the end of the pipe, contraction of the pipe in the direction of length does not take place. When the end face 14 of the former 7 comes into contact with the stopper 18 of the stripper 8, the former 7 comes to a stop, and flare forming is completed. Even if the ball part 10 descends to expand the pipt 4 after flare forming, contraction of the pipe 4 in the direction of length can be restrained and the pipe 4 contacts closely with fins 2.
