PURPOSE:To improve color reproducibility, by compensating the variance of the spectral characteristic of a color filter. CONSTITUTION:A dot sequential signal Si which is the output of an image pickup element 1 is supplied to a level control circuit 2, and the variance of output levels among color signals W, Y and Cy is compensated. The level controlled dot sequential signal Ssi is supplied to sampling hold circuits 4-6 and is separated into color signals W, Y , and Cy and they are synchronized with one another. Synchronized color signals W, Y , and Cy are supplied to a matrix circuit 7 to form primary color signals R-B. Outputs of the matrix circuit 7 are applied to a matrix circuit 20 through amplifiers 13-15 and process processing circuits 16-18 respectively, and further, they are supplied to an encoder 30 to form a color video signal.
