Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a red light-emitting phosphor which has high efficiency, excellent color rendering and a specified composition, by partially substituting trivalent europium as an activator for yttrium.
CONSTITUTION: Predetermined amounts of starting materials such as BaCO3, Y2O3 and Eu2O3 are blended together, thorougly dry-mixed and calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere in a calcining turnace at 1,000W1,400°C for 1W10hr to produce the desired red light-emitting phosphor represented by the formula in which trivalent europium as an activator is partially substituted for yttrium. Pref. the trivalent europium as an activator is substituted for 1W16atom% (calculated as trivalent element) of yttrium. The resulting phosphor has main emission peak at nearly 614nm and secondary emission peaks at nearly 624nm and 595nm under excitation by ultraviolet light, electron beam, etc. Thus, the phosphor has good color rendering.
