Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sliding contact having low contact resistance, favorable sliding properties, high sulfurization resistance and a long life by plating a silver plated layer formed on a metallic substrate with an Sn-Cu alloy having a specified composition.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a metallic substrate such as a brass or phosphor bronze plate is plated with silver in the required thickness and further plated with an alloy consisting of 30W60% Sn and the balance Cu in 0.05W1.0μm thickness. This alloy composition is corresponding to or close to a so-called speculum composition. The alloy assumes a silver color, has high hardness and no malleability, and is easy to crush. Accordingly, it is easily worn by friction and has superior sulfurozation resistance. By moving this alloy contact and its opposite metallic piece while in contact with each other, the alloy is easily scraped off to expose the under silver plated layer, and the electrical contact between them is maintained stably. On the other hand, the noncontact part adsorbs and holds lubricarting oil and shows high lubricity.
