PURPOSE:To make high-precision tracking possible at the reproducing time, by vibrating a recording and reproducing head in the breadth-wise direction of a tape by a minute quantity to form a tracking error signal. CONSTITUTION:At the reproducing time, a recording and reproducing head 6 is vibrated in the breadthwise direction of a tape within the vertical blanking period of the video signal by a minute quantity by the output of a wobbling signal generator 19. The reproduced signal from this head 6 is processed to obtain a tracking error signal from an amplifier 26. This error signal and a wobbling signal are multiplied by a ring modulator 27 and are compared to obtain a tracking correction signal Vc. This correction signal is applied to a head position control circuit 18 to control the head 6 and perform correct tracking. Thus, even if the track width and the track pitch are small, high-precision tracking is performed.
